Transformative and critical theory
Make power consequential for enquiry
Critical theory investigates domination, ideology and unequal social arrangements while connecting explanation with critique. Transformative research explicitly organises enquiry around human rights, social justice and inclusion of marginalised perspectives. The traditions overlap but are not identical: critique need not use mixed methods, and a transformative design requires concrete decisions about participation and power.
Use when the research question concerns inequity or exclusion and you can involve affected people meaningfully, examine structural conditions and make the study's normative commitments explicit.
Strengths
- Makes power and excluded perspectives visible
- Links research choices to accountability and social consequences
Limitations
- Participation may reproduce inequalities within a community
- Normative commitments can narrow attention to disconfirming evidence
Know the boundary
A justice-oriented intention does not establish that a project empowered participants or produced social change.
