Quantitative/ Study design
Cross-sectional survey
Take a structured snapshot.
Measure characteristics, experiences, or outcomes at one period in a defined population. Standardised questions allow comparison and estimation, conditional on sampling and measurement quality.
WHEN IT FITS
You need current distributions or associations and can define the population, sampling frame, and constructs clearly.
Strengths
- Measures multiple variables efficiently.
- Supports population estimates with suitable sampling and weighting.
- Can reveal patterns worth investigating further.
Limitations
- Temporal order and reverse causation are often unclear.
- Nonresponse and coverage error can bias estimates.
- Question wording and self-report affect validity.
Know the boundary
A survey is a data collection method; cross-sectional describes timing. Surveys can also be longitudinal or embedded in experiments.
