Scoping review

Map what evidence exists and how it is described

A scoping review systematically maps the extent, types, concepts and gaps of a literature. Broad eligibility can encompass diverse methods and evidence sources. It normally emphasises charting rather than estimating effectiveness. Critical appraisal is chosen according to the review purpose and should be stated explicitly; its absence limits conclusions about evidence trustworthiness.

WHEN IT FITS

Use to clarify definitions, survey an emerging field or judge whether a focused systematic review is feasible, especially when evidence types and terminology are heterogeneous.

Strengths

  • Accommodates diverse evidence and emerging terminology
  • Reveals methodological and population gaps

Limitations

  • Large scopes can create unmanageable screening workloads
  • Mapped publication volume does not show intervention effectiveness

Know the boundary

A gap in the search results is not automatically a gap in all knowledge or practice.
