Develop interpretations across qualitative studies
Qualitative meta-synthesis is an umbrella for interpretive integration of qualitative findings across studies. Meta-ethnography translates concepts between studies; thematic synthesis develops descriptive and analytical themes; other approaches aggregate findings more directly. A review must name and justify its actual synthesis procedure because these approaches differ in epistemology, handling of context and intended level of interpretation.
Use when several qualitative studies address related experiences or processes and you need a broader interpretation that remains grounded in the contexts of the original accounts.

- Published accounts may omit essential contextual detail
- Combining incompatible interpretations can flatten disagreement
