Phenomenology

Attend to the meaning of experience.

Describe or interpret the meaning and structure of lived experience. Rich accounts reveal embodied, emotional, and temporal dimensions that predefined measures may miss.

WHEN IT FITS

You need to understand what a specific experience is like for those who live it, rather than how often it occurs.

Strengths

  • Examines experiential meaning in depth.
  • Surfaces dimensions absent from predefined questionnaires.
  • Can inform services that respond to people’s experiences.

Limitations

  • Requires philosophical and analytic coherence.
  • Depends on rich experiential accounts.
  • Cannot establish prevalence or causal effects.

Know the boundary

Descriptive phenomenology, hermeneutic phenomenology, and interpretative phenomenological analysis are related but distinct approaches.
