Invite participant responses to interpretation
Member checking invites participants to respond to transcripts, accounts or interpretations. Checking transcription accuracy differs from discussing synthesised findings and their resonance. Responses may correct, extend or challenge analysis, and may change over time. Whether to use it depends on the epistemology, participant burden, relationship and sensitivity of the study rather than a universal requirement.
Use when participants' responses could substantively refine an account and they can engage safely and meaningfully with the material, with an explicit plan for handling disagreement and non-response.
Strengths
- Can reveal errors and missing contextual meanings
- Creates a further opportunity for participant contribution
Limitations
- Non-response and power relations can distort apparent agreement
- Returning sensitive interpretations can create distress or disclosure risks
Know the boundary
Participant endorsement is not a final truth test, and member checking is not mandatory in every qualitative tradition.
