MANOVA
Test a joint pattern across several outcomes
MANOVA compares groups on a vector of continuous outcomes while considering their covariance. It asks whether multivariate mean profiles differ, rather than repeating separate ANOVAs. Common statistics include Pillai’s trace and Wilks’ lambda. A significant joint result needs interpretation through prespecified outcomes, contrasts and suitable follow-up analyses.
WHEN IT FITS
Use when several conceptually related continuous outcomes jointly represent a research question and their covariance matters. Plan independent replication sufficient to estimate the multivariate covariance structure.
Strengths
- Examines coordinated changes across correlated outcomes
- Provides a joint hypothesis test
Limitations
- Sensitive to covariance assumptions and influential observations
- Joint significance can be difficult to interpret substantively
Know the boundary
MANOVA does not convert ordinal categories into genuinely continuous measurements or automatically solve multiple testing.
