Embedded mixed methods
Place a supporting strand inside a core design
Embedded mixed methods places a secondary qualitative or quantitative strand within a larger design to answer a related supporting question. A trial might embed interviews to understand recruitment, implementation or experience. The strands can operate before, during or after the main study. Their different roles and the points where evidence changes interpretation or conduct must be explicit.
WHEN IT FITS
Use when a core design answers the main question but leaves an important process, contextual or experiential uncertainty, and integration can be planned within the available resources.
Strengths
- Adds practical or explanatory insight to a core design
- Can improve recruitment, implementation and interpretation
Limitations
- Secondary strands can receive insufficient time or status
- Differing samples and purposes complicate integration
Know the boundary
Embedding is about the relationship and role of strands, not simply collecting interviews during a quantitative project.
