Convergent

Bring two views into the same frame.

Collect qualitative and quantitative evidence in a similar period, analyse each appropriately, then merge findings to develop an integrated interpretation.

WHEN IT FITS

Both forms of evidence can address complementary aspects of the same question, and comparing them can reveal more than either strand alone.

Strengths

  • Connects measured patterns with context and experience.
  • Can reveal agreement, complementarity, and contradiction.
  • Parallel collection can reduce calendar time.

Limitations

  • Requires expertise and resources for both strands.
  • Misaligned samples or constructs can mislead comparisons.
  • Disagreement needs investigation, not forced consensus.

Know the boundary

Collecting interviews and survey responses is not sufficient by itself. Mixed methods requires intentional integration; neither strand must always have equal priority.
